Naama Levy was a peace-activist and soldier, until she was abducted on October 7th, 2023. It is unknown, if she is still alive, as she remains one of 17 women in Hamas prisons. She has suffered violence and trauma. When she was captured, she suffered wounds to her head, arms and legs, was brought to Gaza, paraded on a Pickup-truck and then pushed into a seat of the same truck. It is in these brief moments, that a dark stain can be seen on her grey jogging-pyjamas.

This stain has been interpreted as blood and the blood as a result of rape. Activists have reenacted this scene and the bloodied pants are now a symbol of the sexual violence of Hamas. There is strong evidence for sexual violence on 7/10 2023: testimonies by victims and orders found with Hamas soldiers.

The stain on Naama Levy’s sweatpants on the other hand could be different from what it seems. Rather than from bleeding it might be the result of uncontrolled defecation induced by fear and stress or, if it is blood, it has other origins. These are the arguments, why vaginal or anal bleeding might not be the source of the stain:

1. Blood contains iron and the colour turns into a rusty brown after a while. Nonetheless, if you consider the timespan between the abduction and scene a few hours later, we would expect a gradient of colours. We see fresh, red bloodstains on her trouser from a different origin: her cuts on hands, next to the dark stain, where here hands were forced to rest, on her legs. Determining blood-stain patterns is a science by itself.
2. The front of the trousers and the crotch are not stained. Blood would soak the surrounding area of the genitalia.
3. She stumbles out of the van with comparable ease, considering a jihadi pulls at her hairs, her hands are tied and her emotional trauma. The pain from rape resulting in internal bleeding would cause her to flinch at least at certain moments, even considering the numbing effect of adrenaline in such a situation.
4. In Hamas‘ go-pro-videos, we see hostages sitting in blood puddles and hostages are dragged through other peoples bodies. People hid in places, where faces and mud might have been present.
   

I am not a forensic expert at all, and my naive, commonsensical reasoning might sound cynical and it might be already discussed and contradicted by experts. There are facts to be missed easily. I consider it likely, that she suffered sexual violence and the short clip proves she suffered extreme violence. I am convinced, though, that the popularization of the symbol, and the display of the stain won’t help the zionist or the feminist cause. Visualization does not always outcompete the abstract, the narrated, the logical conclusion. Antisemites are in full denial of the sexual violence by Hamas, spearheaded by Judith Butler, who scoffs at the question. This is the reason, why we should stay cautious and use only strong arguments especially when we have so many of them. I really do hope, Naama Levy is alive, will be freed and won’t have to deal with a discussion about her pants ever again in her life.

Naama Levy war Friedensaktivistin und Berufssoldatin. Sie wurde am 7.10. entführt, misshandelt, und es ist nicht bekannt, ob sie noch lebt. Sie ist eine von 17 Frauen, die noch in Geiselhaft ist.

Weil sie in einem Video mit einem großen dunklen Fleck auf ihrer grauen Jogginghose zu sehen ist, gilt ihre Hose als sichtbarster Beweis für die sexuelle Gewalt, die aus Zeuginnenaussagen am 7.10.2023 stattfand. Es existieren Reels von Straßentheaterszenen, bei denen sie mit ihrer Hose und dem Fleck nachgespielt wird.

Möglicherweise ist aber nicht Blut die Ursache des Flecks, sondern unkontrollierter Stuhlabgang, was bei Angstreaktionen vorkommt, ein natürlicher Schutzmechanismus gegen Raubtiere.
Gegen einen Blutfleck als Folge einer Vergewaltigung sprechen folgende Argumente:

1. Die Farbe. Zwischen dem Kidnapping und der Parade liegen wenige Minuten bis Stunden. Nimmt man eine derartige Blutung an, müssten durch Nachblutungen zumindest Teile des Blutes noch rot sein. Die helleren, blutroten Flecken kommen vom Kopf, von Wunden an den Füßen und an einer Stelle lagen ihre auf den Rücken gebundenen, blutenden Hände an dem Fleck an, was hier m.E. einen Übergang erzeugt.

2. Der Fleck erstreckt sich auf den unteren Rücken und das Gesäß, nicht jedoch auf den Frontalbereich der Hose und den Schritt. Bei einer analen oder vaginalen Blutung wäre der Genitalbereich im Schritt das Zentrum des Flecks, auch wenn man die angewinkelte Position berücksichtigt, in der sie fixiert war.

3. Ihre Bewegungen. Eine derartige Blutung müsste mit lokalen starken Schmerzen einhergehen, die trotz Adrenalin beim Absteigen vom Jeep instinktiv zu Vermeidungsreaktionen führen müssten. Sie hat zweifellos Schmerzen, jedoch eher im Bereich des Kopfes.

4. Selbst wenn es Blut ist, wäre angesichts der Lage des Flecks ein Sitzen auf einer Blutlache eher als Ursache denkbar als eine Blutung aus einer Körperöffnung.

All das sind nur Spekulationen aus der Ferne und ersetzt keine forensische Analyse. Es ist sehr gut möglich, dass sie sexuelle Gewalt erlitten hat und erleidet. Ich bezweifle jedoch, dass der Fleck der beste Beweis dafür ist. Ich rate gerade angesichts der Leugnung sexueller Gewalt durch die Hamas (z.B. bei Judith Butler) dazu, eher die Zeugnisse der Opfer zu zitieren, als sich auf dieses „sichtbare“ Symbol zu konzentrieren, das sich gegebenenfalls dann als Fehlschluss herausstellen kann.
Ich hoffe inständig, dass Naama Levy lebt und freikommt.
